Early Life

The Jewish couple, Judith (Frehm) and Donald M. Blinken raised Blinken in Yonkers, New York, on April 16, 1962. Donald M. Blinken later served as the United States Ambassador to Hungary. His maternal grandparents were Hungarian Jews, and he was raised as such.

Alan Blinken, Blinken's uncle, served as the United States ambassador to Belgium for a time. His paternal grandfather, Maurice Henry Blinken, was an early supporter of Israel who studied the country's economic viability, and his great-grandfather, Meir Blinken, was a Yiddish writer who lived in the United States during the Holocaust

Career

It was at the State Department that Mr. Blinken began his public service career. In what was then known as the Bureau of European and Canadian Affairs, he worked as a special assistant for three years, from 1993 to 1994. It gives him great pleasure now to be the director of the department where he got his start in government nearly 30 years ago.

Ms. Blinken worked as a member of the National Security Council staff during the Clinton administration, including two years as the senior director for European affairs, serving as the president's principal advisor on the countries of Europe, the EU, and NATO.

Mr. Blinken was also a member of the National Security Council staff during the Bush administration. He also served as President Clinton's chief foreign policy speechwriter for four years, and he was a member of the National Security Council's strategic planning team.

Ms. Blinken served as the national security advisor to then-Vice President Joe Biden during the first term of President Barack Obama's administration. This was the continuation of a long-standing professional relationship that began in 2002.

When Mr. Blinken began a six-year stint as Democratic staff director for the Senate Foreign Relations Committee of the United States Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Senator Biden served as chair of the committee from 2001 to 2003, and again from 2007 to 2009 when he was in his first term.

Trump's diplomats vs. Blinken

Following a squabble between Trump and former Exxon Mobil CEO Rex Tillerson, Trump replaced Tillerson with far-poorer Mike Pompeo, who had been appointed by Trump as secretary of state.

Blinken received a substantial payout when he left the company. His financial disclosure report, which lists income from 2019 and 2020, included details on guaranteed payments and distributions from WestExec totaling $1.2 million in value.

Aside from that, Blinken stated that the firm has at least $1.5 million in equity investments tied to it. In March, he repurchased his share of the company from his former partners. WestExec wasn't the only thing that kept Blinken on his toes over the course of the last four years.

Aside from that, they amassed stock in a handful of companies, including Google parent Alphabet (in which they had a $195,000 stake), and Berkshire Hathaway (in which they had a $139,000 stake), Apple ($120,000), and Facebook ($80,000).
