An Ex-X-Men Star Explains Why They Were Left Out of Deadpool & Wolverine

A tidal wave of well-known Marvel characters, many of whom previously appeared on Fox’s X-Men series, make cameo appearances in Deadpool & Wolverine. Charles Xavier, the renowned mentor of the X-Men, is one figure who is absent from the movie.
On the big screen, the role has been portrayed by two actors. In the 2000 X-Men film, Patrick Stewart played Professor X for the first time. James McAvoy took over the role in 2011’s X-Men: First Class. In the 2014 film X-Men: Days of Future Past, the two faced off.
A version of Professor X was anticipated by fans for Deadpool & Wolverine, especially since the film’s primary antagonist, Cassandra Nova (Emma Corrin), is his evil twin sister. However, James McAvoy clarified his absence from the picture.
At San Diego Comic Con 2024, James McAvoy spoke with Variety about his new film, Speak No Evil. The Scottish actor was questioned if he was invited to make a cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine during the interview. To the amazement of many, McAvoy claimed he never received a call regarding his involvement in the movie.
Although the actor didn’t work on set for any days, he is officially in Deadpool & Wolverine’s credits, which include a touching farewell to Fox’s X-Men universe that includes behind-the-scenes video from previous X-Men films. McAvoy stated:
“I was aware that I would appear in the credits. But not this one, please. No, in my opinion. Before phoning me, they obviously disregarded the possibility that there was a world in which Xavier made an appearance.”
James McAvoy Would Consider Returning to His Role as Charles Xavier
The rights to the X-Men characters are currently owned by Disney (and hence, Marvel Studios), so fans are always conjecturing and fan-casting the ideal X-Men film inside the MCU. President of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige has yet to make an official announcement about an X-Men film because mutants are still very much a fresh franchise in the MCU.
James McAvoy may return to the part of Charles Xavier in the Marvel Cinematic Universe when Feige eventually approves an X-Men movie. McAvoy stated throughout the course of the talk that he never rules out playing a character again. The actor did, however, outline the conditions he would need to meet before considering a return. McAvoy stated:
“I will always be interested in a good role and a good opportunity to tell a good tale. Regardless of whether it’s something I’ve done previously or something entirely different. I am therefore always willing to answer if there is quality content. But it must be excellent. It’s all theoretical because they have to want to do that.”
Although Deadpool & Wolverine is the first stand-alone film starring former Fox properties, there have been previous X-Men appearances in the MCU. The Marvels’ Beast held that distinction.
In the sequence that follows the credits of the movie, Kelsey Grammer returned to the character Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) had entered a parallel realm that appeared to be populated by the original X-Men cast.
Given that Beast made a reappearance and that Deadpool and Wolverine engage in nonstop multiverse-hopping mayhem, McAvoy’s return as Professor X seems highly likely.
