Gameplay of Among Us
Crewmates are given “tasks” to do throughout the world at the start of the game, which generally consist of maintenance work on essential systems like mending wiring and downloading data. To fit in with Crewmates, impostors are provided a phone list of proposed chores. They cannot, however, officially do chores and can only act as though they are performing any of the ship’s tasks. Impostors, on the other hand, may destroy essential systems, lock doors to rooms, transit via the air conditioning system rapidly and surreptitiously, and murder Crewmates while standing near them.
On each map, there are numerous surveillance devices to aid the Crewmates in identifying Impostors, such as security cameras and an admin system on The Skeld, a door log in MIRA HQ, and a vitals indicator in Polus. Crewmates can additionally validate their identity by completing “visual tasks”, which Impostors cannot imitate.
If a Crewmate is murdered or voted out and evicted, they become a ghost. Ghosts may see and communicate with other ghosts, travel through barriers, and observe other players’ actions. Ghosts do not have a limited cone of vision as living players do. Furthermore, ghosts are unable to converse with or be observed by live players. Ghosts assist their living comrades by conducting different acts of sabotage or accomplishing their jobs (as a Crewmate).
Any live player can summon a group meeting by reporting a dead corpse or hitting the Emergency Meeting button on the map at any time, except during large sabotages, when the button is disabled. Players debate who they feel is an Impostor based on the evidence given during a meeting. If impostors are spotted spewing or murdering, they can be recognized beyond a reasonable doubt. However, a player might be suspicious for a variety of reasons. During the meeting, however, all of the players act as a jury, weighing the truthfulness and worth of each other’s remarks and questions. A plurality vote is held, and if the chosen player receives a majority, they are banished from the map and become a ghost.
Players can converse via text chat incorporated into the game, but only during meetings and if they are surviving. While the game does not include a built-in voice chat system, it is typical for players to utilize third-party apps such as Discord or to routinely communicate with one another if they are in close physical vicinity. The game urges players not to talk until they are in meetings if they can hear each other’s voices.
Various parameters may be altered in the lobby of each game to tailor features of gameplay, such as player movement speed, the number of emergency meetings permitted, the number of tasks, whether or not there will be “visual tasks,” and whether or not an Impostor is disclosed after being voted off. There are also a variety of cosmetic choices, such as spacesuit colors, skins, caps, and pets, some of which are available as paid downloadable content.
