Early Life and Professional Career
Amita Kuttner was born on December 4, 1990, in North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada (at the age of 31). He is the offspring of Eliza and Michael Kuttner. Their mother, Eliza Kuttner (née Chiu), was an immigrant from Hong Kong who taught computer science at Capilano College. The father of Kuttner emigrated from the United Kingdom to Canada. They participated in an immersion French program.
In 2005, a mudslide tumbled down the west Seymour River cliff and into the Kuttner residence, killing the mother. Michael Kuttner, their father, survived but was severely injured; he later sued the district for ignoring mudslide safety programs. Kuttner was enrolled in boarding school in California at the time of the incident. Kuttner developed PTSD as a result of the catastrophe.
He got a Ph.D. in astronomy and astrophysics from the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC), where he explored black holes in the early cosmos with Anthony Aguirre. They were members of the Women in Physics and Astronomy organization and co-founders of the university’s 314 Action group, which aims to elect more American scientists to public office.
Amita Kuttner, along with twenty other scientists, co-signed a statement published in the journal Science in favor of youth climate protesters, stating “we endorse and support their call for swift and decisive action.” Kuttner is a co-founder of the non-profit Moonlight Institute, whose mission is to investigate frameworks for climate change adaptation. In April 2021, they were a panelist at the Toronto Metropolitan University event Solve Climate by 2030.
Amita Kuttner, the Green Party candidate for Burnaby North—Seymour in the 2019 Canadian federal election, finished fourth with 9.59 percent of the vote, almost doubling the Green result from 2015. From September 2018 to February 2020, they were the Green Party’s science critics.
Kuttner stood for 2020 Green Party leader. During the campaign, they refused to hold fundraising events with former leader Elizabeth May, citing systemic injustices in the race. They finished sixth with 7.32% of the vote. In 2021, they told the Toronto Star that they had complained to the party’s federal council about transphobia and racism they experienced during the race, including as online abuse.
After Annie Paul’s resignation, Amita Kuttner was chosen interim leader on November 24, 2021. At 30, they are the youngest person to run a federal political party and the first transgender person and East Asian. Kuttner said they planned to start the party’s growth and healing a week after their appointment. The party reported it was insolvent and considering closing its Ottawa office. Since July 2021, the party lost 499 monthly donors and 6,259 members.
Amita Kuttner said the dispute over Annamie Paul’s leadership hurt donations. The study blamed Annamie Paul’s resignation as party leader for legal expenditures. Kuttner said the party’s finances were “back on track” and “turning around” in a December 2021 interview, citing fundraising at the party’s virtual general meeting a week earlier.
The party’s constitution mandates a permanent leadership election to begin six months after an interim leader’s appointment and end two years afterward. Kuttner doesn’t want to be a permanent leader. In December 2021, Kuttner indicated there should be a “longer interval before a permanent leadership challenge, then a short leadership election.”
Kuttner was misgendered on a Green Party leadership election Zoom call in September 2022. Kuttner said the usage of female pronouns “hurt and separated me” and was “representative of a larger pattern of behavior in the party” Lorraine Rekmans resigned after being wrongly blamed for the misgendering.
