Early Life and Professional Career

Amita Kuttner was born on December 4, 1990, in North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada (at the age of 31). He is the offspring of Eliza and Michael Kuttner. Their mother, Eliza Kuttner (née Chiu), was an immigrant from Hong Kong who taught computer science at Capilano College. The father of Kuttner emigrated from the United Kingdom to Canada. They participated in an immersion French program.

In 2005, a mudslide tumbled down the west Seymour River cliff and into the Kuttner residence, killing the mother. Michael Kuttner, their father, survived but was severely injured; he later sued the district for ignoring mudslide safety programs. Kuttner was enrolled in boarding school in California at the time of the incident. Kuttner developed PTSD as a result of the catastrophe.

He got a Ph.D. in astronomy and astrophysics from the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC), where he explored black holes in the early cosmos with Anthony Aguirre. They were members of the Women in Physics and Astronomy organization and co-founders of the university's 314 Action group, which aims to elect more American scientists to public office.
