Billionaire Mackenzie Scott Files for Divorce From Her Second Husband, Dan Jewett

A little over a year after getting married to her second husband, Dan Jewett, Mackenzie Scott filed for divorce. The wealthy philanthropist, who was previously wed to Jeff Bezos, one of the richest people on earth, filed application in Washington State's King County Superior Court to dissolve her second marriage to the former high school science teacher.

Their divorce would probably be “very ordinary and vanilla,” says family law attorney David Glass, who reviewed the document submitted to Washington State's King County Superior Court. This is despite her wealth.

Scott and Jewett, who did not challenge the divorce, did not appear to have a prenuptial agreement, according to court records. However, the ex-couple stipulated the specifics of the split, including what would happen to the marital assets, in a separation agreement.

Jewett did not object to the divorce, according to court documents, and the pair has already agreed to and signed a separation agreement that is not available to the public that details how their assets will be divided. In March 2021, the couple announced they were getting married.

The Washington Post claims that Scott and Jewett first connected at Seattle's Lakeside School, where her four children with Bezos go. Scott and Jewett‘s union first came to light when the educator added his name to her profile on the Giving Pledge website.

“It is unusual to be writing a letter indicating I expect to give away the majority of my wealth during my lifetime, as I have never attempted to accumulate the type of riches required to feel like declaring such a thing would have particular meaning,” Jewett penned at the time. For the most of my life, I have been both a teacher and a thankful student of the kindness of those around me.

This has required me to do my best to emulate their example by donating all of my resources—including time, energy, and material possessions—whenever I have had them to spare. And now, by a lucky coincidence, I am married to one of the most giving and compassionate individuals I know, and I've vowed to work with her to leave behind a sizable fortune so that it can be used to help others.

Scott and Bezos earlier announced their divorce in 2019 after 25 years of marriage. Bezos and Scott divorced in April of that year, and as part of the settlement, she received a 4% interest in Amazon, which was worth $38.3 billion at the time.

In a Medium post from December, Scott disclosed that she had contributed over $4.2 billion of that money to 384 organizations and intended to give away the majority of her riches before she died.

Ms. Scott has repeatedly declined requests from journalistic outlets for interviews in which she was asked to discuss her charitable giving. Attempts for comment from her attorney went unanswered. It was unable to get in touch with Mr. Jewett through friends, relatives, past coworkers, or at a Seattle address that was connected to him. Through a legal assistant, his attorney declined to address the divorce.
