Lost Leaving Netflix Globally Already
Last summer, Netflix secured the rights to the beloved ABC series Lost, not only in the United States through a Disney agreement but also worldwide. Unfortunately, for most regions, these rights are expiring after just one year. However, viewers in the US will have a few more months to enjoy the series before it leaves the platform.
Originally airing from 2004 to 2010, Lost was a survival thriller that transformed television storytelling and arguably laid the groundwork for today’s streaming TV landscape: high-budget productions with intense stakes. Created by Jeffrey Lieber, J.J. Abrams, and Damon Lindelof, the show has appeared on Netflix multiple times, especially in the US during the 2010s before its removal in 2018. Since then, it was primarily available on Disney+ and Hulu until last summer, when most Netflix regions acquired all six seasons on July 1st, 2024, with international regions following on August 15th.
The series was a significant success for Netflix, spending a week in the global top 10 and accumulating hundreds of millions of viewing hours, according to the Netflix Engagement Reports.
Between July and December 2024, Lost amassed 880 million viewing hours worldwide, equating to approximately 58.10 million views. It ranked among the most-watched licensed titles during this period. However, Prison Break, which was also added globally under similar conditions, achieved 1.5 billion viewing hours in the same timeframe. Additionally, Netflix’s acquisition of Lost sparked a notable increase in search interest during the latter half of the year.

LOST IS LEAVING NETFLIX INTERNATIONALLY IN AUGUST 2025
After only one year, all six seasons of Lost will be removed from Netflix in international markets. This means that Netflix users outside the US will lose access to the series in August 2025. Some of the key countries affected include:
- United Kingdom
- Canada
- Australia
- Germany
- France
- Japan
- South Korea
- Brazil
- Mexico
While a last-minute renewal could prevent the show’s removal, typically, once a removal date appears on Netflix, the title is set to leave. The planned removal date is August 15th, 2025, so the final day to watch Lost will be August 14th.

WHEN WILL LOST LEAVE NETFLIX IN THE US?
The United States will retain streaming rights for a longer period compared to international regions. All Disney-owned shows licensed to Netflix throughout 2024 and early 2025 have an 18-month license. Consequently, Lost will leave Netflix US on January 1st, 2026, with the last day to watch being December 31st, 2025.

On one hand, it’s positive that Netflix can license more shows from third-party distributors who previously kept their content exclusive. However, one-year licenses often feel too brief to fully capitalize on a title’s value. Netflix must balance avoiding overpaying for content that may see declining viewership over time, while third parties consider whether licensing their valuable IP ultimately benefits Netflix at their own cost.
